Urban Eola

UE coming out of retirement!?

Not so fast.

About two months ago, I made the decision to stop posting on UE. Since then there has been talk, speculation and rumor around the internet community (well mostly just my head) that Urban Eola is missed. Actually, it's more like I have stumbled upon about 30 interesting potential post ideas (in the last two weeks alone) that I would have definitely posted had the site been running.

I'd say it's 50/50 right now. I'll keep you posted.

Whatever happened to Urban Eola?

Original UE logo (Dec. 05)

After religiously blogging almost every day for two years (12.15.05 to 12.2.07), it looks like the Urban Eola mojo is gone. It's not due to a lack of love for all things urban, fresh or creative. It's mostly due to my web/entrepreneurial clarity and focus.

I learned a ton from doing this site - HTML, Photoshop, blogging. But in the end, I realized that it's hard to attract consistently large sets of eyeballs to a site as scattered as Urban Eola (retro kicks, the environment, funny ads, good-looking athletes). And with that, I'm moving on... to Web Based Brands. And I'm taking my UE influences/background with me. Urbaneola.com will remain up - browse through the 718 posts if you want. Also, I just checked the total stats -- we had 49,021 totals hits. Not bad for a kid who didn't know blogging from logging.

Thank you loyal readers RW, JB, MK, FT, TC, AT, AC, ES, SK, GT, CJ, and AM. Maybe someday we'll make a comeback.

Note to the 'Loyals'

UE readers --

Since I started this blog 667 posts ago on December 15, 2005 I have not gone over 3-4 days without posting. Unfortunately that streak came to an end as it has been exactly 15 days since my last post.

I apologize and realize I have let some of my most loyal readers down. However, I can assure you that the worst of it is behind and I'm ready to rock n' roll back on UE. So check back like you have the last 2 years.

And I ask you to find a soft place in your heart to cut me some slack... as you can see I've been busy.

Alive and kickin'...

Just a short note to let you know UE will be back and running strong shortly. In the meantime, Urban Eola headquarters has moved north from the Sunshine State (Orlando) to the Peach State (Atlanta). However, expect the same great content and don't worry, the Urban Eola name is staying despite the move. My "borrowed" internet connection is so weak it's crazy. Keep posted.

Should Urban Eola change names?

Currently Urban Eola is a site that offers daily posts on cool stuff that I'm interested in. Others have found it somewhat interesting as well - readership has reached about 200-250 unique visitors a day.

New name?
For almost 2 years this site has been named Urban Eola (urbaneola.com). I'm always thinking of ways to make it better. To that end, I purchased a new domain name, The Yup (theyup.com) which stands for The Young Urban Professional. It is the best domain name I have come across that sums up the content of this site.

The Young Urban Professional
Essentially everyone who reads this site is a young urban professional. The name stands for young people who are still hip (definition: fashionably current), but actually work for a living.

Urban Eola
pros: history, unique
cons: might be hard to spell/remember, doesn't represent the site's focus

The Yup
pros: easy to spell/remember, represents the site's content
cons: change from what people know, generic

At this point, I'm leaving the decision up to you. Note: you can only vote once per day.

Should the name of this site change to "The Yup"?
YES, that name is way better
NO, you'd have to be crazy
I'm undecided

Slogan's in

Pursuant to the American way, I picked myself above all others. The intentions were good in the first ever UE slogan contest, but when it came down to it, I muttered out the slogan that will be used for a long time on this site (at least 3 weeks). It's pretty solid - short, descriptive, and giving visitors a good feel for the Urban Eola ideals.

Introducing the latest and greatest UE slogan:

urban eola // your lifestyle headquarters.

Slogan contest

UE's had multiple slogans, but none have jumped off the page...YET. Now's your chance to put your slogan in lights right under the newly revealed logo. Here's some examples:

Logo love

It's that time of the year for the Urban Eola logo update. Gone is the way too big logo size and the "city outline" style. In are the colored "city dots" and a web 2.0-ish shadow effect. I like this one a lot better so I'm pretty sure I'll keep it awhile. Whadaya think of it?

Urban Eola doubles in size with new contributing writer

Up until this point, I've been the sole workhorse behind all 449 Urban Eola posts. Although I have enjoyed gearing the content around my interests and tastes, I realize that no organization can be successful without the perspectives of various people. I'll now have help as last month, a loyal reader responded to my 1 year anniversary post seeking contributing writers.

Urban Eola would like to introduce a new member to our burgeoning empire - Michael Kramarz (aka MK). Michael will offer a somewhat younger perspective on all of UE's topics. He's a freshman at Duke University in Durham, NC, and he hopes his posts will be as interesting to young readers as they are to readers who too were young once. He once ate lunch with the Duke basketball team and is not a member of the lacrosse team.

MK will begin posting weekly (or whenever he thinks of something UE worthy). Make sure to check out his posts - they'll be fresh.

Anyone else interested in joining a rising force of a blog as a contributing writer, contact us.

1 // FAQ's

Q:
What does Urban Eola mean?
A: The name Urban Eola was derived from combining our zest for urban culture with the beautiful, scenic Lake Eola Park neighborhood in downtown Orlando, our original headquarters. The combo of the two names sounded so cool that we purchased the domain name. In fact, the first time the words "Urban Eola" were ever spoken steam rolled off my tongue.

Q:
How is Urban Eola set up?
A: The site is set up in a standard blog format with the most recent post on the top of the front page. The previous 13 posts are in reverse chronological order on the front page. After that, the rest of the posts can be found by clicking "view all posts" at the bottom of the page or the monthly archives at the top. You can search the whole site by specific keywords that you're interested in reading about on the search bar at the very top left of the site.

Q:
What the hell is a blog?
A: A "weblog" is page with dated entries in reverse chronological order, so that the latest updates are always at the top of the page. Blogs have allowed small, yet creative concepts with limited startup funds to generate large and captive audiences through the viral internet. In many instances blogs are competing with, and often surpassing traditional forms of media (newspaper, TV, etc.) in audience sizes.

Q:
How often do you post?
A:
We're not one of those anal blog sites that gets flustered if there's not a post up every day at 9 AM or anything like that. Instead, we post when we run into something interesting enough to share with the UE readers. Usually, it works out to 1-4 posts a day, which is perfect for you short attention-spanned readers out there. We've spent enough time in front of a computer to decipher the good stuff from the average stuff. Trust us, it'll be like a highlight show of our best ideas, thoughts, sightings, and content.

Q:
Why read Urban Eola?
A: You know that feeling that you have when you walk into a nice Starbucks or Borders with your laptop in tow knowing you have an hour of relaxing and "intellectual entertainment" in front of you? That's the feeling Urban Eola is trying to replicate with this blog. Our inspiration for the urban lifestyle comes from a couple places we have spent some time: New York City, Europe, Orlando, and Atlanta. Come check out the Urban Eola lifestyle because we think you'll have a good time doing it.

Q:
Sometimes I click on a link and the link does not work. Why?
A: We guarantee that at the time we publish each and every blog post all links are up and working. However, after time certain links are no longer good due to link rot, which is the process by which links on a website gradually become irrelevant or broken as time goes on, because websites that they link to disappear, change their content or redirect to new locations. Usually a quick Google search will yield the same results of the rotted link.

Q:
How much does it cost you to run the site?
A: Not much. Urban Eola is hosted for free using Blogger and the domain name urbaneola.com was purchased for $7.20 on GoDaddy. The template is a combination of things we found on the internet along with our own design. The thousands of unique visitors that have enjoyed an Urban Eola blog post have done so via a whopping $0 spent on advertising and marketing.

Q:
You stole something from my site. How dare you!?
A: The beauty of blogs is that they are such a fast-moving and efficient form of media/ entertainment. Having to obtain proper copyright permission for every story, image, etc. would defeat the purpose of blogs. To that end, Urban Eola does not intend to infringe any copyright laws with the production of this blog. If you want any content taken off this site, please request so via email.

Q:
Couldn't someone else start the exact same blog?
A: Yes. But it wouldn't be as good because we know where to consistently find original content that our readers are interested in. Plus, Urban Eola's diverse... meaning the site does not focus on one specific subject but covers a spectrum of stuff that you guys are interested in.
