Live entertainment artist David Garibaldi
Friday, November 09, 2007
This guy David Garibaldi has turned boring canvas art into a live entertainment spectacle. So much so that he performed at halftime of a NBA game last night. That space is usually reserved for dunking mascots, big time bands or the the guy who spins basketballs all over his body.
The only other guy to make art so entertaining was the legendary Bob Ross.

People's online mag
Wednesday, June 27, 2007
I'll be honest I read People magazine and check People.com. It is pretty much my way of keeping fresh on pop culture. Now People just recently came out with a new digital magazine, which has the look and feel of a traditional paper magazine but with all the benefits of computer graphics, audio and visual. Check it out, it's pretty neat.A whole new magazine experience
I could actually see myself reading a magazine in this format. It has the potential to be a very enjoyable experience. Ads can be more interactive and stories can include videos and sound clips. And the cool part is that the pages actually flip like regular magazines with the click of a button.
Death to the old magazines
It's a really cool concept that I haven't seen online yet. But what's really cool about it is that traditionally launching magazines can be a costly proposition. Digital mags allow you and I to enter the game and compete. It'll be interesting to see how they fare.

Knocked Up gets two thumbs up
Saturday, June 09, 2007
Good movies are hard to come by. Good comedies are even harder to come by.With that said, Knocked Up is probably the funniest movie I've seen since summer of 2005's Wedding Crashers. I was laughing pretty much for 2 hours straight. And if you have any type of personality, you will too.

When was the last time you used a pay phone?
Monday, May 14, 2007
As I walked in the trendy Thornton Park neighborhood (Washington Post article) last week, I noticed a pay phone and wondered who uses those things anymore? Cell phones have obviously made them obsolete. I can't remember the last time I personally used a pay phone. I remember in junior high school I used to call my mom collect and when they asked for my name, I'd quickly say "practice over, come pick me up".I don't even think people think of using them nowadays. For example if someone's cell phone died, I could see them waiting for it to charge up again before using a pay phone. However, if not just for their pure old-school symbolism, I think they should be kept active and functioning wherever possible. In fact, I'm going to use one next time I get a chance.
Declining numbers spell likely end to payphones - USA Today.
History of the cost of pay phone calls
In the United States, the coin rate for a local direct-dialed station-to-station call from a pay phone has been 50¢ in most areas since mid-2001, for an unlimited number of minutes. During the 1960s and 1970s, the same call in the United States typically cost 10¢. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, this price gradually changed to 20¢, and again rose to 25¢ in some areas between 1985 and 1990. In the late 1990s, the price rose to 35¢ in many areas.

Funny or Die with Will Ferell
Thursday, April 19, 2007
This is pretty awesome. Funny or Die is a new viral video website. Will Ferrell stars in this homemade-looking internet video. "The Landlord" (below) is a genuinely funny two-minute movie in which Ferrell plays a lowlife who is accosted by his angry landlady. The catch: Pearl, the landlady, is played by a 2-year-old.
After being posted on Funny or Die.com, "The Landlord" quickly went viral and had scored nearly 1.6 million views as of this writing, piling on tens of thousands more every hour. Brilliant. Read the LA Times story.

2007 SI swimsuit edition
Thursday, February 15, 2007
Since 1964, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue has been a brilliant idea by Sports Illustrated. The best part is it allows guys to not look like pervs when buying the magazine (by the mailman or the grocery store clerk) because technically it's a "sports publication". That's what makes it great - the Swimsuit issue has nothing to do with sports. Singer Beyonce is on the cover of this year's music-themed edition. The issue came out yesterday, Valentine's Day. No irony there, huh?I wonder what percentage of men order the $50 magazine subscription purely for this one issue. Check out the SI 2007 online version you "sports fanatics".

Put your head on a bobblehead
Friday, February 09, 2007
Bobblehead dolls are awesome. Apparently they were big at Major League Baseball games in the 1950's and 60's. It was not until the late 90's, early 2000's when they became pop culture collectibles again. I can speak firsthand that they were fetching some big money on Ebay. Word on the street is that you customize your own bobbleahead from a picture of your face. I quickly browsed and found 2 sites that'll do it: Whoopass Enterprises and headbobble.com. Super Bowl spoiler
Tuesday, January 30, 2007
If you watch the Super Bowl for its commercials, then you'll like Britney's ex, Kevin Federline in this Nationwide spot. It's set to air during Sunday's Super Bowl. Is it good enough to cause the Super Bowl hangover, where the day after the big game, millions come to work unfocused and hungover, or simply call in sick altogether with the big loser becoming the nation’s economy.

The state of poker
Thursday, January 11, 2007
Special contributing writer David Ash, himself a rounder, joins UE for this "insider" piece. Following are his thoughts on the game:For the last couple years, it’s been possible to find poker on TV at any and all hours of the day, but this won’t last for long. Last year, Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (with exemptions for lotteries and horse races, government hypocrisy at its finest) and most online poker sites promptly closed their doors to US customers.
After years of growth, the World Series of Poker will likely see participation drop as much as 50 percent after exponential growth in previous years. This could lead to a crash in the entire online poker industry. For all you rounders out there, the only glimmer of hope is that the new Democratic Congress might overturn the law, but with bigger problems looming that seems a distant possibility.
UE notes // The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was rammed through Congress by the Republican leadership in the final minutes before the election period recess. According to Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.), no one on the Senate-House Conference Committee had even seen the final language of the bill.

Is Beckham U.S. bound?
Wednesday, January 10, 2007
Update // 1.11.07 - hate to say I called it, but I did.
Beckham's conquered practically every region of the world, but the U.S. His penchant for fashion, marriage to Posh Spice and his high profile social life make him a perfect candidate for a move to the States. Major League Soccer approved a new rule this summer called the "Beckham Rule", which allows teams to go over the salary cap and spend whatever money they want on up to 2 marquee players. L.A., is Beckham on his way to the hometown Galaxy? Here's a great article on his possible move. While you're at it watch Ali G's hilarious interview of Becks and Posh.
Notice there's no soccer pics.

Di*k in a box
Wednesday, December 27, 2006
From loyal reader BW:
In case your first Christmas/Hannukah present for your lady didn't go over well, here is your chance to make it up... especially if she likes boy bands and you like boxes. Watch the video (the ending is hilarious). Yes, that's Timberlake.
And while we're on the subject, check out this hilarious idea for a company - Huge Brand condoms. While the actual products within are of standard size, the box they come in is gigantic — perfect for average fellows in need of a compensatory boost.Choose from the Nightcap (a pack of three), the Weekender (twelve), and the Extended Stay (36), depending on your plans (and stamina). Each comes with the word HUGE printed in suitably ginormous lettering so all who see it know just what they’re dealing with - until they deal with it.
Lastly on the subject, a revisit of one funny UE post.

8 best looking athletic leisure shoes in the world
Saturday, December 16, 2006
Some shoes just plain look cool - especially urban/retro athletic leisure shoes. Here's Urban Eola's list of the 8 all-time best looking leisure kicks in the world:1) Adidas Rod Lever (white with any accent color) // Rod Laver was an Australian tennis pro in the 1960's. Like Stan Smith, an American tennis player around the same era, adidas gave him the honors of a namesake shoe. The Laver is ageless. No matter what accent color (the classic green, navy blue, green/orange) adidas uses for this shoe, as long as it's paired with the classic white, it's money. Looks good with any outfit. Old tennis guys and urbanites alike are sporting them.
2) Air Jordan IV (black/red) // MJ at his best. Look how much they're going for - $550! Notice they have the Nike logo on them - later models didn't. I've wanted a pair since I was in 4th grade when they came out.
3) New Balance 574 (navy blue/gray or gray/orange) // Classic look. Not to be confused with these (which I don't like at all). Started off as a hard core running shoe.
4) Nike Dunk Low // Originally a basketball shoe in the early 80's and turned into a pop culture phenomenon. There are about a million different customized Dunk Low's out there. You can customize your own at NikeID.
5) Nike Air Max 90 // One of many legends in the Nike Air Max running line.
6) Adidas Gazelle (royal blue with red bottoms) // First launched in 1968 as an all-around training shoe, it became the off-field shoe among soccer players. Look for the original ones with the different colored sole.
7) Vans Checker // I can't pull them off but Andy Roddick can. They've made a major comeback in the last two years after serving primarily as skater shoes in the early 80's. Rad.
8) Nike Lava Dome // Nike's first "All Conditions Gear" outdoorsy shoe. I actually picked up a pair at the Nike Outlet store for $18 a couple years back
If you notice one of the trends is that all of these shoes were once a top athletic shoe of their time. Now they're all worn for looks and leisure. While you're at it, check out this really cool looking show website: Flight Club New York. And this site's pretty cool: Capitol 1524 (a Seattle-based retro shoe store)
Random takes on urban/retro attire. As you can see "urban" and "retro" are used interchangeably. At Barnes & Noble last night, I saw some chick wearing a subway map t-shirt (order them here). It got me thinking that one of those would look pretty sweet with jeans and any of the kicks above. Kinda like this. As always, scouting fresh looks.
